Where do I pay the rental fee?
The total rental sum must always be paid at the rental station. Invoices are not issued.
When do I get a group discount?

Groups receive a 10% discount on the basic pric for 10 or more people who pay.
Discounts cannot be accumulated. No discount on return transport. Rail tickets, vouchers, promotions, etc. will not count.

How old does my child have to be to be carried in the child seat?
Child seats are suitable for children from approx. 1 year of age (9-22kg) who can sit up without help.
Can I bring my own trailer?

As a matter of principle customers' own trailers or child seats/equipment may not be
attached to Rent a Bike bicycles.

The hirer is liable for any damages to the bicycle caused by manipulation - see GTC.

Where can I rent Child seats?
Child seats can be rented at a number of stations (free - please reserve). Child seats are only available on the Heart Route if booked well in advance (Tel. +41 41 921 05 75).
Do we accept the junior carte from SBB?

Rent a Bike accepts Junior Cards.

With the SBB Junior Card, children up to the age of 16 receive a 50% discount on rented accommodation (repatriation fee cannot be discounted) if at least one parent rents a bike. Parents pay the basic price. The Junior Card is only valid for the following price category: Velo / Mountainbike -V-Brake. Discount cumulation is not possible. Railbon, vouchers, promotions, etc. are not creditable.

Does Rent a Bike also have offers in combination with train services?

Where can I get combi-offers with a rail ticket?

Where can I find guided tours?

Rent a Bike does not offer guided tours, can however help you to find local guides.

What does "rent 1 day" mean?
1 day = 1 calendar day, not 24 hours (collection in the morning, return in the evening).
How can I extend a RailCheck or voucher?

Please send the RailCheck and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

and you will recieve a new RailCheck (one time only).

Where can I redeem the Smart-Box?
See the booklet in the Smart-Box for information on possible locations where the Smart-Box can be redeemed.
Do I have to state that I have a Smart-Box during reservation?
No you can mention it when you have to pay at the rental station.
What does standard rate mean?
Standard rate means the price for customers who do not have a subscription (half-price ticket, GA, etc.). RailBons and vouchers must always be deducted from the standard rate.
How much does it cost to rent a bike?
See price-list for information on prices.
What does basic rate mean?
The basic rate includes the normal rate for customers who do not have a subscription (half-price ticket, GA, etc.) and the discounted rate for customers who have a subscription. Discounts or "Bons" cannot be deducted from the basic rate.
Can I pay with my credit card?
Credit cards are not accepted everywhere. Please note the information given at the rental stations. Standard means of payment are cash CHF / EC / PostCard / Visa / Mastercard.
Where can I redeem my Heart Route gift voucher?
Heart Route package deals are provided by our partners and must be redeemed from them. www.herzroute.ch. Rent a Bike only reserves the bicycles.
Do I have to state that I have vouchers during reservation?
You do not need to mention vouchers when making a reservation. They should be redeemed at the rental station. Vouchers are only valid with the 12-digit Pay Serial No.
Can rail vouchers (Railbons) or other vouchers be used together with other offers?
No, RailBons cannot be added to other offers. The offer always applies to the normal rate (full price).
Where can I redeem rail vouchers (Railbons)?
RailBons can only be redeemed at the stations stated on the Bon. They are only valid with the 12-digit Pay Serial No.
Where can I redeem RailChecks?
RailChecks can only be redeemed at the stations stated on the Check. They are only valid with the 12-digit Pay Serial No.
What is classed as a school group?

Discounts for children aged up to 16 years also apply for participants up to their 26th birthday if they are:

  • Pupils in obligatory Year 9 school classes;
  • pupils at public and private middle schools (grammar schools, commercial and trade schools, technical schools, agricultural schools, Year 10, etc.);
  • students at colleges of higher education and universities;
  • pupils at schools for the deaf, blind, the visually impaired;
  • groups with adolescents living in homes for the disabled, orphanages, children's homes, etc.;
  • participants in "Jugend + Sport" events (with a stamp from the J+S authority).

In order to claim the discounts available to schools and youth groups an order form signed by the school office, cantonal "Jugend + Sport" authority or  Magglingen Fed. Institute for Sport (EHSM) and with an official stamp must be presented; children under 6 years of age will be included when calculating the minimum number of participants.

What is the discount for school groups?
School groups accompanied by a teacher can travel for less from Monday to Friday - They will be given a 50% discount on the normal rate for 10 or more  people who pay. No discount on return transport. The schools discount does not apply to e-bikes and tandems. Discounts cannot be accumulated. Rail tickets, vouchers, promotions, etc. will not count.
How many bikes do I need to book to qualify for an individual group trip?

The mobile bike station is available for 10 or more bikes.

Who are disabled vehicles for?
Disabled vehicles can only be rented with a disabled person's pass.

Can I mount my own panniers on the rental bike?
Customers are responsible for fitting any saddle bags they bring with them. See Bikes for information on bicycle luggage carrier systems.
If I rent a FLYER at a Heart Route station, can I also ride the FLYER off the Heart Route?
You may also cycle outside of the Heart Route, must, however, return the FLYER to a Heart Route station. If you are travelling outside of the Heart Route you have to check the availablity of 36V rechargeable batteries yourself. Please take the battery's radius into consideration.
Can I attach my own child seat to the rental bike?
Customers are responsible for fitting any child seats they bring with them. See bikes for information on bicycle luggage carrier systems.
Where can I rent a child trailer or trailer bike?

Child trailers can be rented at a number of stations.

You can only rent children's equipment in combination with the corresponding bike.

Where can I rent a racing bike?
Racing bikes are only available from our partner at www.swisstrails.ch.
What types of bike are available?

Where can I rent an e-tandem?
E-tandems have not been available for hire since 2013.
Does rental also include a helmet?
From 1 May 2019 the helmet will be subject to a charge.
Where can I rent a bike trailer?
Bike trailers (for children) are available at a number of stations.
Can I return a tandem to a different rental station?
Tandems must always be returned to the station where they were collected. A-B rentals are not possible.
Can I rent a bike trailer on its own, without the bike?
Bike trailers can only be rented in combination with a bicycle.
Can I buy the rental bike?

Bicycles and e-bikes are taken out of the rental pool after 1-4 years and refurbished, after which they can be purchased.

Can I reserve a FLYER in my size?
In some cases, sizes can be reserved (depending on the station). The stations will try to meet your wishes.
Are there ladies' and men's FLYER on the Heart Route?
No. Only the C8.1 model with a low step-through are available. They can be ridden by women and men.
Can I rent panniers?
Panniers are not available for rental. You can, however, bring your own pannier. See bikes for information on bicycle luggage carrier systems.
Can I rent a basket?
Baskets are not available for rental. You can, however, bring your own basket. See Bikes for information on bicycle luggage carrier systems.
Does my rental bike have panniers?
Saddle bags are not offered as standard. The only exception is for e-bikes which can be supplied with a charger and saddle bag on request.
Does Rent a Bike also provide bikes for people with disabilities?

What should I do in the event of an accident?

The rental station must be informed if you have an accident. See GTC rent.

What should I do if I am unable to return my bike on time?

The rental station must be informed by telephone in all cases if you are going to be late. Should the station no longer be manned, then customers will be responsible for bike security.

Can I get a refund of the outstanding amount if I return the bike early?

Customers are not entitled to reimbursement of the remaining rental sum if they return bikes early.

What should I do in the event of theft?
Bike theft must be reported to the police by the renter and the rental station must be informed immediately.
Who is responsible for defects during the rental period?

The lessee is obliged to inform the lessor concerning any damages or losses which occur.

The lessee is liable for all damages to the rental object and its accessories during the rental period caused by falls, vandalism, forces of nature, manipulation, incurred during transport as well as also due to improper use or use in any manner other than that which was originally intended.

Customers will be directly charged at the railway rental station for costs resulting from minor damages and loss of materials as per the official RaB price list. 

The renter should check the condition of the rental object on collection and inform staff about any defects.

How old does a rider have to be to ride an e-bike?
E-bikes may only be ridden by persons aged 16 or over, or from 14 or over if they have a moped licence.
How much notice do I need to give to cancel or change my reservation?

Cancellations or changes may only be made at the rental station and free of charge up to a max. of 24 hours before the rental begins. Contact details are given on the reservation confirmation.

Can I take the rental bike to another country?
You are allowed to take the rented bike abroad. It must always be returned in Switzerland. Please always take the rental contract with you.
Why is it not possible to return my Heart Route FLYER to a station outside the Heart Route?
Because the Heart Route has its own logistics system, which means that it is not possible to return the FLYER to stations which are not on the Heart Route.
Can I take my rental bike on the train free of charge?

Rental bikes can only be taken on trains for free if the rental contract was issued at a ticket counter.

  • The rental contract is the transportation ticket for the rental bike.
  • Passengers must have a valid ticket.
  • Max. 5 rental bikes per train.

=> This offer does not apply for groups!

How is the bike insured?

The customer is responsible for insurance (private liability, theft).

If there are insufficient bikes available at a station, will additional bikes be brought from another station?

No, you can only reserve the number of bikes available at the corresponding station. Bikes will not be transported from one station to another.

The mobile bike station is available if you need 15 or more bikes.

Where can I stay overnight?

Rent a Bike does not offer accommodation.

Where will I find the rental station telephone number?
Rental station telephone numbers are provided in the reservation confirmation emailed to you or under stations.
Where can I return the bike?
Bicycles must be returned to the rental station stated in the rental contract. See the Rent a Bike map for information on return stations.
How quickly will I receive confirmation of my reservation?

For bookings at an online station you will receive theconfirmation immediately by email.

Offline stations will send you an immediate confirmation of your reservation enquiry by email. The rental station will check the availability and contact you by email within 48 hours. Should you need to know sooner, you can always call the rental station. The telephone number is shown on the reservation enquiry or under Stations.

Should you not receive any email, please contact the rental station. 

Can I return a bike to any railway station?
Returns are only possible to railway stations displaying the AB sign on the map stations.
Where can I reserve a bike?
Please reservate your bike online: Reservation / Reservation heart route / Reservation slowUp
How far in advance should I make a reservation?
Please make reservations as early as possible as the system is available to everyone at all times via the Internet.
How do I change a reservation?
Reservations can only be revised or cancelled by the rental station. The telephone number is given on the reservation confirmation or under stations.
How will I receive the reservation confirmation?
The reservation confirmation or confirmation of a reservation enquiry will be sent by email. Should you not receive a confirmation, please contact the rental station.
Can I reserve the bikes for different dates?
Reservations can only be made for one date. In the case of multiple reservations Rent a Bike has the right to enquire and, where applicable, to delete surplus reservations.

Are there parking spaces for cars in the vicinity of the rental station?
Renters are responsible for finding parking spaces. Rent a Bike does not provide any as most stations can be reached easily using public transport.
Where will I find the rental station opening hours?
Rental station opening times are given under stations in the Opening Times sub-menu.
Why do I have to state the pick-up and return times?
Some stations are not continuously manned. Staff are only present at the stated times.
Can I also pick up or return my bike outside of opening hours?

Our opening times are binding. Anyone arriving late will be charged for an extra half-day.

If I rent a bike for half a day, can I return the bike to a different rental station?
No, half-day rentals are only possible if bikes are returned to the same rental station.

Where can I get the Heart Route book?
You will be given the Heart Route book when you collect your bike at the rental station or you can order a copy at www.herzroute.ch
Can I return a Heart Route FLYER to a point outside of the Heart Route?
No, the Heart Route is a closed e-bike system. Heart Route FLYER must be returned to Heart Route stations.
Can I pay with Reka Checks?
Reka cheques are accepted at all stations.
Does Rent a Bike also organise luggage transportation?
Renters are responsible for luggage transportation. Rent a Bike only offers this service for the mobile bike station and it is subject to an extra charge.
Do journey times for suggested tours also include rest stops?
No, the travel times stated for tours suggested by Rent a Bike only include the time cycled at a comfortable pace. Breaks are not included.
Where do I see the availability?
You can check availability before making a reservation. We have a booking plan for this.
Can I buy a 36V battery (used)?
No, you can't buy a battery (new or used) by Rent a Bike.
Is a reserve FLYER battery provided on the Heart Route?
Rechargeable battery exchange stations are located approx. every 20km along the Heart Route. Please change your battery in the evening (see opening hours). The exchange stations are close to the track. This batteries are exclusively for heart route rental-bikes. Additional batteries are not provided with the bikes.
Will I be provided with a reserve battery?
Additional rechargeable batteries are not provided with the bikes (exception: heart route). A charger can be provided if required.
How far will a single battery charge last for?

The radius of an e-bike depends on the model selected; the level of assistance selected; the topography of the route and the rider's weight.
